Percival Rowland Cocks

The church on Brentor is dedicated to St. Michael. It was built on a volcanic outcrop and is partially surrounded by iron age earthworks. It stands on St. Michael's line which links churches named after the saint from Cornwall to East Anglia.

Just had a proper look at your blog Ian, it is really interesting. Congratulations to you and your wife for thinking of something so original. The links are also fascinating - my grandmother came from Devon. My paternal grandfather met her when he was a merchant seaman and she was collecting cockles on the a beach.

June, Thanks. My wife's family are all from Bristol and were all connected in some way to the sea. Her grandfather was a steam ship skipper and her father a tug boat skipper.

Hi Ian,
My 2nd gen grandfather came from Ashsprington Devon.
His parents ran a successful farm there. They moved and passed away in Newton Abbot. (not sure why they moved, old age to live with other children?).
I've been unable to locate the graves.

John Reeves born 1891 died 1866
Agnes Hambling Reeves born 1897 died 1868

Their son William J. Reeves born 1826 left Ashsprington to be a seaman (he was age 11) and after 11 years on the sea traveling the world, he ended up in Wisconsin in the U.S.A. in 1848 and died there in 1882. Its amazing that he started a career so young, he must have made a lot of money because when he arrived in Wisconsin in1848 he purchased 400 acres of land. The woman at the records office said he must have been very well of to purchase as much as he did. He also ran a successful farm until his death to cancer in 1882.

William's family was not as adventurous as he, most of the Reeves family has been in Wisconsin since 1848.

Any suggestions on how to find where John and Agness are buried?

Hello Dawn,

I'm no expert on searching for lost ancestors. But you could try this website http://parishregister.co.uk/ which might be a good starting point. Best wishes.
