There are over 600 prisoners buried in the church yard of St Michael and All Angels church. The first prisoner died in 1851. They were buried with no headstone, they are none only through the church burial registers. The 72 small granite headstone were used after 1904, they have the prisoners initials and date of death only inscribed on them. One prisoners family had a full size headstone put where he was buried but they were only allowed to put his initials and date of death as well, they had a short verse inscribed at the bottom of it.
